๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธFun Facts about MiWay ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ

๐ŸŒธHow did MiWay start?
๐ŸŒธHow has it developed since than?

๐ŸŒธ"MiWay (stylized miWAY) is a public transport agency serving Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The city's Transportation and Works department is in charge of its operation.
The current MiWay service consists of two types of bus routes, MiLocal (local buses that make frequent stops) and MiExpress (express buses between major destinations), and includes the Mississauga Transitway, a dedicated east to west bus-only roadway used by several MiExpress and MiLocal routes.
MiWay's routes connect with GO Transit commuter rail and intercity buses. The system also connects with Brampton Transit to the north, Oakville Transit to the west, York Region Transit to the northeast, and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to the east, including the Islington and Kipling subway stations on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth. MiWay is a member of the Canadian Urban Transit Association.
In 2013, MiWay's annual ridership was 35.8 million passengers, with more than 50.9 million boardings

Public transit in Mississauga was first operated by Charterways Limited as Mississauga Transit Systems with four buses in 1969 and was acquired by the city's newly formed Mississauga Transit in 1974, incorporating the former towns of Mississauga, Port Credit and Streetsville. Services began on November 1, 1973.
It later acquired routes formerly operated by others, such as;
Mississauga Transit was renamed MiWay on October 4, 2010. New MiWay-branded hybrid buses entered service, with orange MiLocal buses on local routes and blue MiExpress buses on express routes. Advertisements were placed on buses and shelters in September 2010 to introduce users to the new branding. Older buses using the old logo would continue to be used until they are decommissioned. Service levels did not change with the rebranding.[2]
The reason for the company's new name is twofold: "Mi" could be interpreted as standing for Mississauga, and it is also a homophone of "My", suggesting possession.
On December 1, 2011, the last high-floor bus retired, making the transit fleet 100% low-floor and fully accessible. As of October 22, 2012, bus stop pads have been put at all stops that MiWay serves. This allowed all routes, hence the entire system, to become fully accessible "

๐Ÿ’ฐHello! Update, the bussing fares have been recently mentioned on Mississauga's city website: http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/cityhall/pressreleases?paf_gear_id=9700020&itemId=7000332q

              ๐ŸŒŽJan 24, 2017๐ŸŒŽ

"Starting on January 30, 2017 most MiWay fares will remain at 2016 rates, with the exception of adult and senior tickets.
In addition, on May 1, the PRESTO single fare for post-secondary students will increase to $3 from $2.85, the same rate as the adult fare, which aligns with neighbouring transit systems.
“MiWay understands the importance of providing affordable transit, while at the same time making modest fare changes to offset costs,” said Patrick Phaneuf, Acting Transit Director. “Transit growth depends on attracting new riders to the system. To do so, requires continued investment to increase service levels, frequency and to operate and maintain the Mississauga Transitway – the city’s east-west dedicated bus corridor."

“Almost 60 per cent of MiWay’s fare revenue is through PRESTO and we continue to encourage this transition to PRESTO,” added Phaneuf. “It is less expensive for MiWay customers to use PRESTO to pay for their fare rather than a regular cash fare or a ticket.”

Mythbusters

Do you ever get that feeling that you know where you are headed, and than suddenly in an inevitable  quick flash of a second, you don't know where you are?

This is a common fear that most non-bus users, or perhaps highschoolers, (such as me, who somehow didn't double check their route, or ask the driver to confirm, in which I highly recommend for first time users) who are on their first time. In contrary to all those who may feel as if it is the end of the world,
I would like to clarify and bust this myth, in which getting lost on a bus is not inevitable, and with a few easy steps you can ide is smooth and stays smooth!
There are many tactics and techniques that you can use to ensure that you never have to go through this, so here is my story, which happened just today.

Today, I was on my way to go shopping at my favorite thrift store, because, girl, we need to go shopping, especially since exams are almost over, we deserve a treat!
So, making my way to my computer lab, I quickly typed up the directions route search, and on a rush, since I didn't want to miss out on the sale, I took a few pics of the route onto my phone, not bothering to check for bus changes/route changes.

I made my way to the waiting post, and waited for 10minutes before getting on to the bus. **Quick  note , I have taken the route to the thrift shop before, so this ride went smooth, however I did suffer from a small anxiety attack in fear that I almost missed my stop, which again if you want to avoid this, double check your routes to ensure you don't forget the streets/stops.

After getting my shopping done, I checked my phone, **note on google maps, the icon highlighted in orange or blue, along with an orange or blue number signifies your stop, however what I later learned is that you need to double check your bus, since it may not be accurate**
My phone indicated in bright orange, 1W, and so I thought I definitely could just go on 1W sine the bus was highlighted. Neglecting to take pics of the stops, I was unable to look at the list,

And so blindly, I made my way into the bus, not asking any questions.
BIG MISTAKE.

The bus was ongoing for 40 minutes, and as it passed y school, and went in the opposite way that I was supposed to go, I was thinking.. . . . something has got to be wrong.

I felt as if I was dead gone, as the bus might not be able to locate my location, but by communicating my circumstances to the boy beside me, I as able to find further help.

Thankfully, the boy right beside me was helpful enough to answer my questions, and he tld me that I was supposed to ride the 1C, or else I don't know where I would have been.

Thank you, MiWay bus driver, for your patience and willingness to help me find my way back to South Common, as mentioned- 36L as my savior, thank god I was able to find my way back.

Lesson learned: always confirm, and double check your routes
People are kind and able to help! Ask, ask ask!

My testimonial on MiWay Transit

Hello, readers!

Here is a quick testimonial outlining some basic pros and ways to improve the current public transit in my area. This is my opinion, and is objective, thus if you would like to add on your own experiences or comments, please feel free to do so. So, lets begin ! ~

Pros

  • efficient for environment
  • time saving
  • safe for everyone
  • organized
  • easy to navigate
  • nice bus drivers
  • bike racks for bikers

Ways to improve

  • make seats more space efficient to allow for more seaters
  • have racks or storage for ease of use
  • extend bike rack storage

  • waiting outside on cold days would be better with walls/waiting room
  • extended wait times at night time would be better if notifications could be given before hand
  • easily full buses - perhaps better space efficiency
  • no schedule on poles, some poles are ripped and no longer have the number for customer service on them.- allowing them to get replaced

Overview
Overall, I enjoy taking the bus because it is very safe and effective on the community.
By the view of the busy stations, I can see that many people depend of MiWay to go on with their daily life , thus making it an important trademark and part of our city. On behalf of our team,

Free busing at MiWay-Transit?

Are you eligible for free busing? Here are the details.
The freedom pass program, originally introduces just a few years ago, is successful
in getting youth engaged and in the know in their communities.
The freedom pass allows for pass users to get access to public swimming pool facilities and to get free busing for the whole summer.
Users must be 12-14 years old, roughly grade 6-9 would be the age group.
I\f you are luckily in this age group, hop on by to your nearest MiWay centre or transit operator to get more info and stayed tuned for this summer- it will be a blast!
My next post will be my review and my personal testimonial on MiWay.

This Blog is being run by MiWay Student Ambassadors from Erindale Secondary, who would be glad to answer questions regarding busing and to improve the customer busing experience- MiWay is the way to go!

For this week's fun fact #1:

MiWay is the name of the Mississauga Public Transit Operating System, which runs buses circulating along routes of Mississauga, allowing citizens, travelers, and employers to commute on a day to day basis.
This Bus transportation system is best known for its widespread centralization and construction of grid networks.

Just recently, in 2016, the MiWay Grid 5 Network was introduced to allow for better wait times and well rounded efficiency to allow for time saving and locally targeted routes to allow for more stops at frequenter times.

The buses shown above are an example of the convenience and efficiency that MiWay offers in their services. Buses come in all different designs and constructions, and 2 categories who are customized for customer convenience. Express routes, who are meant to take passengers from across longer distances are in blue (displayed on teh left) whereas Local bus routes, taken into the local communities and streets, are orange.

Thank You for reading this post.

If you have any questions, or comments regarding your Mi Way experience, we would love to know in the comments, what your favorite thing about MiWay is.
